Project Description

Artemis Temple

Artemis Temple is one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. This once magnificent temple was erected in praise of Artemis (Diana), the virgin goodness of nature, and the protectress of women in childbirth. A single majestic column arising from the marshy area, and bits and pieces strewn around the ground are all that remains of the Seven Wonder of the Ancient World. In its glory days, the temple covered an area 4 times of the Pantheon, with 127 columns, each one 20 metres high. It was pillaged and the carvings stripped away and used as a convenient source of marble for the building of the Basilica of Saint John, Isa Bey Mosque and even Aya Sofya in Istanbul, some rem ants were taken and placed in archaeological institutions such as the British Museum.

A full-day tour is available which covers Ephesus, House of Virgin Mary, Artemis Temple and Sirince Village, includes an excellent lunch, all transportation, English speaking guide and all entrance fees.
